Heard Around the Fire

In these times of extremes and imbalance,  one of humanity's first teachers -- Grandfather Fire --  is speaking to people once again.

He's been called "the first shaman" by the Huichol Indians of Mexico's Sierra Madre, who call him Tatewari.

This book, published by Sacred Fire Press, chronicles many of the lessons Tatewari has shared during teaching fires around the world.

There has never been a more important time for the voice of Indigenous wisdom to come center stage! It is through the lens of Indigenous perspectives that we can redream our relationship with Mother Earth and bring healing to ourselves and the sacred world around us.

The Sacred Fire Foundation is blossoming into a global presence thanks to the passion of our donors. Here is a sampling of how our work is supporting and revitalizing Indigenous perspectives across the world...

The Sacred Fire Foundation is honored to support Women's Earth Alliance

When women come together, amazing things can happen...

Women's Earth Alliance is working in the US, India and Africa to bring women's voices together to protect Mother Earth and Her people. Our first project with WEA focuses on supporting Indigenous women in California to protect their sacred land from extreme energy extraction. We look forward to supporting them in the future, as well!

Sneak Preview: Teokari film

A brilliant way to inspire people about the importance of Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous wisdom

The Sacred Fire Foundation helped fund this beautiful glimpse into the lives of the Huichol of the Sierra Nevada mountains of Mexico. This documentary, now in postproduction, gives people a taste of what it means to live in deep heartfelt connection with the living world around us, with one another and with ourselves.

We are thrilled to announce the funding of the Heart of the World pilgrimage!

It is an honor to help support The Elders Project in their work with the Koguis, Arhuacos, Wiwas and Kankuamos.

Thanks to a tremendous outpouring of generosity, these four Indigenous Peoples will be able to make their sacred pilgrimage in the Heart of the World. By making their pagamentos (offerings) to the 54 sacred sites along the LĂnea Negra in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia, they can bring balance and healing to their people and their land and strengthen their traditions. They can also continue to serve as Guardians of the World, tending Mother Earth for all of us. These Indigenous Peoples have been declared at risk for cultural extinction by Colombian Court decree.

Dr. Vandana Shiva revitalizes the traditional teachings on the sacredness of seed in India...

Mobilizing the Grandmothers

The Sacred Fire Foundation provided a grant to Dr. Shiva's organization, Navdanya, which translates as the Nine Sacred Seeds. Navdanya created Grandmother Universities to pass along the ancient traditions around seeds, planting and ceremonies. Through elder teachings, film, printed materials and festivals, Indigenous wisdom is being brought forth to help assure food sovereignty and add a powerful voice against GMOs that threaten their traditional food supply.

Lama Tenzin Wanyal Rinpoche 2013 Wisdom Fellowship Recipient

The Sacred Fire Foundation was honored to present Lama Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche with the Wisdom Fellowship Award at Ancient Wisdom Rising.

We were delighted that he made a special trip back from Berlin for the weekend to be with us. We were gifted as he led us in meditation and also shared the poignant story of how the Bon tradition has survived against so many odds.

Who are Indigenous Peoples? Why does protecting them now matter more than ever?

"Indigenous Peoples hold the moral reserve of the World," Onondaga Chief Oren Lyons to the United Nations Forum on Indigenous Issues, 2013.

"It's pretty ironic that the so-called 'least advanced' people are the ones taking the lead in trying to protect all of us, while the richest and most powerful among us are the ones who are trying to drive the society to destruction." Noam Chomsky Read More

What truly sets Indigenous Peoples apart is that they have never forgotten their intrinsic connection to the sacred world and how that informs every aspect of their lives. Embedded in this perspective is that we as human beings are sacred too, thus having the natural capacity and deep longing to take our rightful place in this sacred dance.
It is this traditional wisdom that is the guidepost for bringing Western Culture back into balance and right relationship with Mother Earth.

Every urgent issue on the world stage at this time would benefit from Indigenous wisdom. Embedded in Indigenous perspectives are ways to create balance in every aspect of our lives and with the sacred world around us.

We are committed to not letting one more precious Indigenous teaching, tradition or language disappear on our watch. We need your partnership to make this happen. We invite you to commit boldly to this dream. Mother Earth and all Her sacred beings need you. Please help us with your gift today and please consider becoming a monthly donor.
